Why is it called Kentucky White?
Back in 2014, a man walked into J's and asked for a white BBQ sauce, as he had recently traveled to Kentucky and tried a white BBQ sauce that he loved. Although we didn’t make one at the time, Jen and I are always intrigued by new ideas. Jen went back in the kitchen, whipped some ingredients together (just as we both did in creating our entire menu), and brought it out to the man’s table. After tasting it, she asked him what he thought of it. After analyzing the flavor in his mouth, he looked up at her and said, “this is actually BETTER than what I tried in Kentucky!” He asked her what it would be called, and her response, “well I guess let’s call it Kentucky White.” From that day, Kentucky White was born. The name, having dual meaning~ is not only my (Susan’s) father’s favorite sauce but also honors my family’s roots in Lexington, Kentucky. Susan's great-grandfather was “born and raised in Lexington, Kentucky and was selected to attend West Point Military Academy. He went for one year, but for whatever reason, he left and finished his degree in civil engineering at the University of Kentucky. He graduated in 1910! His father, Joseph Waller Marshall, was Lexington’s Chief of Police. His mother, Susan Wallace Marshall, who graduated from Columbia Christian College in Columbia, MO, earned a degree in Musical Arts. Her father was President of the college. Today, Kentucky White is still our #1 selling sauce, and was our first product to enter the marketplace, and first product to be picked up by Sysco Foods.
